Samsung Electronics is setting the stage to make a bold move. According to recent leaks, the tech giant plans to unveil its highly-anticipated Galaxy S24 at an ‘Unpacked’ event in the United States early next year. Given the buzz surrounding this upcoming release, here’s what we’ve gathered so far.
Samsung’s American Strategy
The company plans to make the announcement in San Francisco, California, a location closely tied to Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino. Samsung has maintained its strategy of unveiling the Galaxy S series in San Francisco and the Galaxy Z series in New York for several years. Interestingly, the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Flip5 were launched in Seoul this July, a strategic move that analysts say was aimed at supporting South Korea’s bid for the 2030 Expo.
Expected Features and Specs
Speculations around the Galaxy S24’s hardware are rife. For starters, the device is expected to sport either the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor or Samsung’s own high-end Exynos 2400 chip. Both are likely to be used in different models. However, due to past overheating issues with the Exynos 2200, the premium Galaxy S24 Ultra is anticipated to feature a Qualcomm processor exclusively.
The new flagship is also projected to come with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, an improvement over Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro. As for the camera, a front-facing 10MP camera and rear-facing 50MP+ camera are expected. Battery life is another area of focus; Samsung is planning to include a 4000 to 5000mAh battery depending on the product line.
What It Means for Samsung
The Galaxy S24 is significant not just for the mobile experience (MX) division but for Samsung Electronics as a whole. Recent setbacks in semiconductor sales have increased pressure on the MX division, which is now being eyed as a crucial profit center for the tech giant. According to industry insiders, the MX division is expected to record a mid-level operating profit of around 3.3 to 3.7 trillion won this quarter alone.
As Samsung is gaining ground with its Galaxy Z Fold5 and Flip5 models, which are projected to outperform their predecessors by around 10%, the MX division seems poised to continue its positive trajectory. Looking ahead, the upcoming Galaxy S23 Fan Edition (FE) is expected to bolster performance in the last quarter of this year.
Samsung’s next big reveal promises to be an event worth watching. With the Galaxy S24 set to unveil stateside, it could strengthen the company’s foothold in the high-end smartphone market, an arena increasingly crowded but still led by industry stalwarts.
